Trump's Approval Rating Slightly Declines Amid Rising Economic Worries

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll indicates a slight decrease in President Donald Trump's approval rating, fueled by growing concerns among Americans about the health of the national economy and the Republican president's ability to curb rising prices. The three-day poll, which concluded on Sunday, found that 41% of respondents approve of Trump's performance as president, a slight dip from the 42% in a similar poll conducted from September 5-9.

Worsening Outlook on the U.S. Economy

Approximately 54% of respondents expressed that they believe the U.S. economy is "off on the wrong track," an increase from 53% in the August poll and 52% in July. This reflects a growing unease about economic stability. Only 35% of respondents approve of Trump's handling of the economy, and 28% are satisfied with his approach to the issue of cost of living – both figures are slightly lower than previous polls. Trump had promised to fix the economy during his presidential campaign.

Mixed Economic Data

August saw a significant slowdown in job growth in the U.S., and the unemployment rate rose to 4.3%, its highest level in nearly four years. Simultaneously, inflation accelerated last month.

Shift to Sharper Political Rhetoric

Following an attempted assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk this month, Trump has significantly shifted his rhetoric to focus on what he calls the "threat posed to the country by his political opponents." During a memorial service for Kirk last Sunday, he stated that "violence comes overwhelmingly from the left."

Extremist Ideologies as a Top Issue

Throughout this year, Reuters/Ipsos polls have shown that Americans view political extremism as the biggest problem facing the nation. In the latest poll, approximately 28% of respondents cited it as their top issue, while 16% considered the economy the primary concern.

Partisan Divide on Addressing Extremism

When asked which party has a better plan to deal with extremism, the support was nearly even: 30% chose Republicans, and 26% believed Democrats are better, while the remainder felt that "neither party is sufficient" or expressed "uncertainty."

Trump's Few Positives

Despite the economic issues weighing down Trump's approval rating, Republicans received higher support than Democrats (34% vs. 24%) regarding "handling economic policies." Trump's approval rating continues to be bolstered by the relative popularity of his immigration policies – which include mass arrests of people suspected of residing in the country illegally. About 42% of respondents approve of Trump's immigration policies, the same as earlier this month, and also his "highest approval rating of all individual issues in Reuters/Ipsos polls."
