About

TIPS.US typically refers to Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) issued by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. These securities are designed to protect investors from inflation. The principal of a TIPS increases with inflation and decreases with deflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI). When a TIPS matures, the investor receives the adjusted principal or the original principal, whichever is greater. TIPS also pay interest twice a year at a fixed rate applied to the adjusted principal. These securities are considered a low-risk investment option because they are backed by the U.S. government and provide a hedge against inflation, making them attractive to investors seeking to preserve their purchasing power.

Factors

Inflation Expectations: Higher inflation expectations generally increase TIPS prices as investors seek inflation protection.

Real Interest Rates: Lower real interest rates (nominal interest rates minus inflation expectations) tend to boost TIPS prices, making them more attractive.

US Treasury Yields: Changes in nominal US Treasury yields can influence TIPS prices, particularly in the short term, as they affect the overall bond market.

Market Sentiment: General risk appetite and investor demand for safe-haven assets can affect TIPS prices.

Supply and Demand: The issuance of new TIPS and investor demand for existing TIPS influence their prices.
